Owner Interview with Carlie1998 of the Honolulu Waverunners

1.) Who is carlie1998? Hello, my name is Jamie H. (37 yrs old) from West (by God) Virginia. Carlie is my daughter, she was with me when I set this account up and wanted to be a part of it.

2.) How did you get started in HBD? I’ve always loved playing sim games, but always against computers. So when I came across this site one day while looking on fox sports, I thought I’d sign up and see how I could do against other people.

3.) Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? WVU Mountaineers, Atlanta Braves (I think because they used to be on TBS all the time when I was younger).

4.) What is up with your team name? Who wouldn’t want to live in Hawaii. (I thought that I could lure some good players with that.) As for the Wave Runners? That was just the first thing that came to my mind.

5.) Who are your rivals? This was just my 3rd season and 1st in the Show II. I won my division by over 20 games so no rivals there, yet. If I had to pick one I would pick Primetime17. Went 5-5 in the regular season and thought we would meet in the NLCS. But unfortunately they didn’t even win one playoff game.

6.) Who is your favorite Show II player? And who is your favorite player on another team? My favorite player is the all-time HR and RBI king Esteban Delgado. Again, I’ve only been here 1 season, but the one guy that I would have love to have had this past season was Triple Crown/MVP Winner Ivan Harris.

7.) How does it feel to win a championship? It felt great, especially in my 1st season here. But that was my goal from the first day when I saw what kind of a team somebody had left me. I thought about going to Disneyland, but then I realized I couldn’t afford it.

8.) Many players play along time before they learn how to win the world series, so I have to ask, are you really a first time HDB owner? The only other HDB experience before this season was 2 seasons in foxx world. In my first season I took a team that had never won more than 81 games in 11 seasons to 105 wins but lost in the NLCS and then 84 wins my 2nd season. That was pretty much a 1 team world so I left to find something more competitive. I just went with the old saying that pitching and defense wins championships.

9.) Can you keep it rolling in season 5? I’m looking forward to the challenges of trying to repeat. I’ve got all the key players returning, and I’ll look to F/A or trades to try and improve.

10.) Any advice for new owners? My advice for new owners would be to use the help tab. I learned the hard way on some things that I thought I understood.

11.) What do you like best about HBD? And what would you change? I like the unpredictability and the realistic stats (most times), but I would like to fire and hire coaches during the season and also like to see more diamond in the rough players and higher rating increases.

02/04/10: Welcome New Owners

Yggdrasil(Cleveland Steamers) After a below average season, the NL north franchise turned to Foxx defector yggdrasil, who is a long time owner with 30 seasons mostly in Koufax.

Ratatat72(New York Yankees) vet owner ratatat takes over a contender and brings them to the Big Apple. This gives ratatat his seventh current team.

Apmcpm(San Diego Red Ball Express) The team no one would take gets picked up by one of the Foxx defectors, two time world series owner apmcpm. Hopefully they will not lose 100 games again this season.

Jamesb007(Helena Superbas) The former Twins franchise is still in good shape after the move to Montana under new owner jamesb.

Ewd330(Syracuse Express) 52 seasons, 52 playoffs, 47 division titles, and 12 world series titles are brought in by new ShowII owner ewd lookout American League.

Ripnsnort(Montgomery Biscuits) Foxx defector ripnsnort once led a team to a 17-145 record. With two stellar pitchers like Angel Miranda and Tony Myers he should definitely be better in Montgomery.

Amberjack34(Colorado Springs Cobalt Cobras) With only 3 seasons completed Foxx defector amberjack is taking over last season worst team, A lot of work needs to be done in Colorado Springs.

Leyenda(Cheyenne Black Feathers) Brand new to HDB leyenda takes over one of the worst team in the ShowII, but with some very young talents some patients and this team can be great.

02/08/10 MONEY MONEY MONEY

Bidding wars for the top free agents this year helped three players get RICH!!!
Albert Pescado
Nashville
Troubadours
Age: 28B/T: L/L
Born: Santa Lucia, VE
Position(s): P (SuA)
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Top notch closer Pescado signed with Nashville for a whooping $62.5 Million 5 year deal. He teams with Jorge Olivares to make one of the best late inning pitching squads in the ShowII

The bidding on Perez almost hit the max salary, it ended with Pawtucket giving the 3-time all-star getting $98 Million five year deal. His signing pushes Sean Parrish to the bench and adds a 40 homer a year infielder to the already strong Primetimer lineup.
Don Webster
Jackson
Junkies
Age: 30B/T: R/R

Position(s): 2B/CIF/OF/DH

Former Daze 2B Webster persuades the Junkies to give him a $45 million deal that ends after his 35th birthday. His standout power is being used as a rightfielder in Jackson

2/19/10 Out of No Where Dan Hurst

Dan Hurst
San Francisco
Crabs
Age: 24B/T: R/R
Born: Alabaster, AL
Position(s): 2B/1B/LF/CF/DH
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Somehow rookie Dan Hurst has come out huge this year stealing 44 bases in 45 games. He has stolen a base in 26 games this year, and even stole 5 in a game against Portland. But where did this new age Benji Limoncome from?
The Crabs found him and took the 24 year old in the Rule 5 draft this season with the 4th pick. Before that he was mismanaged in the Brewer-Ballers-Yankees minor league system. In season 1 he was a fresh young 2B with big league potential, he showed his value with 198 hits, 142 runs, 61 stolen bases, a .308 batting average and a .404 OBS. Then he under former owner godsize, he disappeared, he was left on the inactive list for all of season 2 and season 3 limiting his growth. When netobin took over the franchise and moved out to Buffalo in season 4, he promoted Hurst to the AAA team as a 1B/DH. Hurst showed up again with 195 hits, 137 runs, 60 stolen bases, a .317 avg and .405 obs. When the San Francisco Crabs began preparing for season 5, they decided to see if Hurst, who has 100 speed and 85 range, can play in centerfield and leadoff. If he continues at this pace he will have 243 hits, 186 runs, 178 stolen bases with his .326 avg and .418 obs.

01/06/09 Owner Interview with arm123 of the San Francisco Crabs

1.Who is arm123? arm123 is a 30 yr old father of 2 and a chef. My name is Aaron.
2.How did you get started in HBD I play a couple other online sim games and just came across this site by a Google search. Glad I did, as this game is far more complex and user intensive than any of the others.
3. Who are your favorite real-life sports teams I follow the Longhorns completely. As far as pro sports, I enjoy the NFL and MLB. No one team that live and die for, but I do root for Texas teams the most since I live here.
4.What is up with your team name? Team name...well, I chose the city b/c I always liked that ballpark. The name was just random, thought of the ocean and picked something out.
5.Who are your rivals? I haven't developed any rivals, I am trying to gut this team and rebuild.
6.Who is your favorite Show II player? And who is your favorite player on another team I haven't found a favorite player in the league. On my team I'd have to go with B. Dewitt,(Brady Dewitt in AAA) he was my 1st pick in my first year here.
7.What do you like best about HBD? And what would you change? I really enjoy the complexity and involvement it takes to manage a team. There are a few things I don't like, but the worst is coach hiring.
8.If they made a Show II player of you, what would your ratings look like? I played baseball when I was younger. I would be a RF'er with good defense (70's across) and durability (never injured), avg speed and contact (50-60) and good power (70's). Decent player but not a star by any means!

01/06/09 Owner Interview with buddy996 of the Oakland Thunder

1.Who is buddy996? buddy996 is my dog, born on Sep 9, 2006.
2.How did you get started in HBD? A friend asked me to check out his SIMS teams and to help him with his HBD team and I got hooked on HBD, never got interested in the other baseball games.
3.Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? The U of M, U of M, U of M and oh yeah, the University of Michigan.
4.What is up with your team name? I started a 10 man (later expanding to 12) Strat-O-Matic face to face baseball league in 1981 and just always liked the team name Thunder. My league is still playing but I had to drop out 3 years ago because I moved an hour away and it got too expensive traveling back and forth.
5.Who are your rivals I don't really have any rivals but if I did it would be ggd1022, he is the best manager in the AL (since I have been here) and I appreciate the pointers he has helped me with since I joined.
6.Who is your favorite player? And who is your favorite player on another team? Players come and go, but my real life all time favorite player was Ozzie Smith.
7.What do you like best about HBD? And what would you change? I like that it plays 3 times every day. If I could change anything, it would be that I "WOULD NOT" let teams reclaim FA players before everyone else has a jab at them. Letting everyone make a claim on your extra players would help to balance out the league quicker.
8.If they made a Show II player of you, what would your ratings look like? I played all 3 OF's during my playing days, I had a great glove, range and speed but a terrible throwing arm (strength wise) even though it was accurate.

01/04/09: Playoff Pushes (with 4 games remaining)

Kansas City vs Monterrey for the AL South Championship
KC was once the worst team in the Show II and in one season raybie2305 has them 3 games ahead of Monterrey in the AL South. The Stars can also get the 2nd seed and a first round bye if Oakland slips up.

Nashville vs Indy for the last NL wildcard spot
The 3 game lead the Troubadours have on the 500s seems like a lot but Indy has been known to finish strong. It would take a sweep of the champs in Pawtucket and some Nashville losses to get Indy to its first playoff.

Wichita vs Pawtucket vs Honolulu for the number 1 and 2 seeds in the NL playoffs
The WaveRunners have a one game lead and finish off with series vs 100 loss team Arizona so should be a lock for the number 1, while Wichita and Pawtucket have tough opponents to play in front of a home crowd.

12/16/09: Owner Interview with raybie2305 of the Kansas City Stars

1.Who is raybie2305? I'm a 30-yr-old civil engineer from Cincinnati (actually Northern KY). Graduated from University of Dayton in 2002. Married, no kids, 1 dog.
2.How did you get started in HBD? Heard about WIF from a local sports talk show host. Started with simleague baseball and hoops dynasty. After getting into HBD, I was hooked and gave up simleague and hoops.
3.Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? I'm a long-time suffering Bengals and Reds fan. Season-ticket holder to the Bengals, which is finally paying off. Grew up a UK basketball fan and pull for the UD Flyers as an alumni.
4.What is up with your team name? I wish I had a clever response but I don't. Kansas City was available and I liked the ballpark ratings, hence Kansas City. My philosophy with this team is to buy my way to the top, hence "Stars". Just so happens the major newspaper in KC is the KC Star.
5.Who are your rivals? This is my first season in Show II, but I'm quickly building a rival with the Monterrey ChiChi's. We've been neck and neck all season in the AL South.
6.Who is your favorite Show II player? And who is your favorite player on another team? Favorite player on my team is probably Orber James because he's a stud SP, he makes the minimum, and he doesn't speak English so he can't talk back to coaches. Favorite player on another team would have to be Ivan Harris . I mean, how can it not be?
7.What do you like best about HBD? And what would you change? I love the depth and attempt at real-life in HBD. I could literally spend hours evaluating my franchise (if I weren't married). I hate everything involved with hiring coaches. Hate how long it takes, hate that you can't offer longterm deals, and hate the games that some owners play to get their guy.
8.If they made a Show II player of you, what would your ratings look like? I'd be a pretty good defensive utility player with an average stick. I was good enough to play a little in college, but I played a different position every year. That either means the coaches liked my versatility or they thought I was never good enough to give a position!

12/16/09: owner Interview Strikeout26 of the Arizona BlueSox

1. Who is Strikeout26? 1. Strikeout26 is Kenny Faulk. I am a pitcher in the Detroit Tigers organization. I was drafted out of Kennesaw State University this past draft and was assigned to class-a short season Oneonta Tigers.
2. How did you get started in HBD? 2.I got started in HBD when my younger brother, who was 14 at the time, purchased a team and found the game too complex, so he gave it to me.
3. Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? 3. My favorite real-life sports teams are the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Falcons, and the Atlanta Braves.
4. What is up with your team name? 4. I am not exactly sure what is up with my team name. It is the name the previous owner picked.
5. Who are your rivals? 5. I have had enough time or been competitive enough to develop any rivals.
6. Who is your favorite Show II player? And who is your favorite player on another team? 6. My favorite player is my catcher Raul Hernandez, and I do not have a favorite player from another team yet.
7. What do you like best about HBD? And what would you change? 7. I like the realisticness that the game provides and the fact that they keep trying to improve this. I wish that each player could be managed more individually (i. e. set base-stealing aggressiveness for each player)
8. If they made a Show II player of you, what would your ratings look like? 8. I would be a LHP with a 80 durability, 100, health, 100 makeup, 30 stamina, 78 control, 77 vs.L, 82 vs.R, 55 gb/fb, 93 vel., 90 p1, 70p2, and 65 p3(Editors note: This is pretty close to his real-life ratings http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/F/Kenny-Faulk.shtml)

12/16/09: Upcoming Free agents

2B Machado is top 10 in hits with 168 and has hit 538 hits in almost three seasons since coming to the Cincy franchise. He will be only 29 and want a long term deal which franchise will make him rich in season 4? Listed Price $7.5 M

12/08/09 Owner Interview with Decks of the Nashville Troubadours

Sorry for the essay... Two beers and boredom make for lengthy answers. =)
Who is decks? I'm a 29 year old student at ASU (Arizona State) studying Film Production. I've been in school for some time now, but finally working in a field I really enjoy and feel I have a good chance to become successful in.
How did you get started in HBD? I've always loved the sim modes in sports video games (I think someone else mentioned this as well) and so this was perfect for me. I believe I heard about the website from the sportswriter Bill Simmons, although I think he just plays the simleagues, which aren't my style.
Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? I'm a lifelong Cubs fan, but as an Arizona transplant I follow the D-backs as well. I'm also a huge Everton fan. I follow the Bulls and Dolphins as well, but baseball and soccer are the sports I follow the most enthusiastically.
What is up with your team name? I normally spend an absurd amount of time picking my team names. I take way too much pride in them, and try to do some research on the city to try to make them as poignant as possible. If I don't love my team name, I feel less attached to that particular franchise. My favorite is the Las Vegas Pack Rats (big Dean Martin fan,) but the Troubadours are a close second. I got it from a George Strait song, and its a wandering singer, which fits nicely with the Nashville location.
Who are your rivals? My biggest rival would have to be tbook, as Jackson and I have split the last two division titles (looks like he's got this season as well.) The last two owners to beat me in the playoffs are both no longer in the league, so I can't get revenge. Primetime and fumanchu seem to always been in contention, and Melchuck's teams always are a tough series in the division.
Who is your favorite player? And who is your favorite player on another team? Nicholas Lee is the future of this team. I love his combination of power and speed, and he might even develop into a passable CF (might have to settle at 2nd, but we'll see.) Despite my other fantastic rookie Caeser Lee, I think Nicholas should be a lock for ROY. I really miss having Clay Speier , so he'd be my favorite on another team. If KC wants to trade him back, I'm always willing to talk.
What do you like best about HBD? And what would you change? I love the depth of the game, and at least the attempt at reality. Which makes the coaching situation so perplexing, its not awful, but its not realistic in any way. For a game that tries to be realistic, it seems strange that they seem happy with the current coaching system. I've also run into some veto issues in the past, and that's never fun. I would be interested in exploring better ways to watch game results as well.
If they made a Show II player of you, what would your ratings look like? Ha, well... I just mentioned realism, so I wouldn't be in the game at all. I can play a good SS in my softball league, but I could never hit a damned curved ball to save my life...

12/08/09 Owner Interview with Primetime17 of the Pawtucket Primetimers

Who is Primetime17? Im a retired Harness horse trainer from NYC.
How did you get started in HBD? I clicked a link on MLB.com and discovered WIS. Played sim BB at first, tried just about all WIS games, but was hooked on HBD when it started.
Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? Die hard Met and Jet fan.
What is up with your team name? Worked for a company named Primetime Sports Marketing at one time and just like the sound of it.
Who are your rivals? Dont really have any rivals but would love to beat jrcpga in World Clarkson after finishing 2nd to him 12 straight seasons.
Who is your favorite player? And who is your favorite player on another team? Guess you mean real life... I always loved Keith Hernandez, Mike Piazza, Joe Namath and Curtis Martin. As unpopular as it is I love Barry Bonds.
What do you like best about HBD? And what would you change? I love the complexity and the reality of it. I hate the injuries. Dont mind the guys getting hurt and missing time but the drop in rating points are killer. Also I think the rating points go up too slowly from draft to 28 and drop to quickly from 28 on.
If they made a Show II player of you, what would your ratings look like? Id be a 1B with an 80 glove. Decent contact, power and splits and 0 speed. (Im not fat, just SLOW).
How did it feel to win the championship? (Rub it in) I have a lot of seasons and ALOT of WS appearances but only 7 WS wins. I’m like 7 for 25 in the WS. So winning one is sweet and a surprise.
Do you feel the championship makes teams play harder against you this season? They better because my team is even better this season.

12/01/09 Owner Interview with Patterba of the Portland Voodoo Hippies

Who is patterba? patterba is Brett Patterson
How did you get started in HDB? I got duped into doing it by my friends.
What are your favorite real-life sports teams? Seahawks & Mariners of Seattle.
What is up with your team name? Voodoo - for Voodoo Donuts in Portland, Hippies - for all the Hippies that live in Portland.
What is your plan for your team? In the process of three year rebuild.
Who are your rivals? The Vancouver Bobsled Team
Who is your favorite player in the Show II? Favorite player on someone else's team? My favorite player is Julian Aguilar and on someone else's team is Bubbles Allen because his name is Bubbles.
What do you like about HDB? And what would you change? I love being a GM and all the detail the game has, the thing I would change would be the diamonds in the rough, and I think that someone in the later rounds should be good pros.

12/01/09 Owner Interview with Caseroc of the Indy 500s:

Who is caseroc? My name is Casey Bloom. A recent college grad from Seattle. I went to Pacific Lutheran University, majoring in Communication. I have done a fair amount of work around government and politics in my short professional career.
How did you get started in HDB? I got started in HBD after playing Hoops Dynasty for awhile. I tried it once and felt it was too deep. I thought that it took too much time. I decided to try it again and now I love it. I am very close to dropping my hoops teams and just focusing on HBD.
What are your favorite real-life sports teams? I was born and raised in the Seattle area. I am a huge Mariners fan and attend 40 or so games a year at least. I also follow the University of Washington and the Seahawks .
What is up with your team name? I like choosing team names that fit with the area. I have attended the Indy 500 and I really enjoy watching open wheel racing.
What is your plan for your team? I feel like I have a very good set up with the 500s. I have team right now that is in contention for a playoff berth. I have what I think is a strong minor league system that will allow me to be very good in a couple of years
Who are your rivals? My rivals are Andersaa of the Vancouver Bobsled team and Patterba of the Portland Voodoo Hippies. I know them both personally and always want to beat them.
Who is your favorite player in the Show II? Favorite player on someone else's team? My favorite player is Eugene Coffie in my minor leagues. He was my first pick in what turned out to be a very strong draft for me. I think he is going to be a star. I also really like Jerry Mullaney on my team. I think I definitely got the better of Patterba in that trade.
What do you like about HDB? And what would you change? I like HBD because it is so deep, almost too deep sometimes. I am a huge baseball nerd and this is a great outlet for that nerdiness. I love and hate trying to explain HBD to other people. Most just dont understand the appeal. I have always loved simulating sports teams on video games. I always end up not playing the games but instead just going through seasons and trying to build good teams.

11/30/09 All Star Snubs

Howie Stearns (Hon): WaveRunner setup man Stearns went 5-0 and 5 of 5 in save opportunities while hanging on to a 2.20 ERA.
Willie Tavarez (Cin): Cincy 1B Tavarez was third in the NL with 118 hits and sports a .325 batting average.
Jose Lugo (Ind/SLC): Switching teams midyear is only reason NL league leader in hits 2B Jose Lugo was left out of the All-star game.
Keith Maddox (Oak): Maddoxs AL leading 36 homeruns, along with 105 hits and 1.035 OPS were not enough to earn an invitation.
Alvin Wilkins(TB): Tampa Bay workhorse Alvin Wilkins gets no love after a 10-2 start, even with a 3.67 ERA and 129 strikeouts.
Albert Pescado (TB): Cyclon closer Albert Pescado had a league leading 30 saves at the break, but the selection committee must have decided he has too many awards already.

11/23/09 Top 3 Amatuer Draftees

Vin Arrojo a sophomore pitcher for the Community College of Baltimore County in Dundalk Maryland Lions was selected by Hartford as the first overall pick of this seasons amateur draft. Arrojo projects to a left-handed ace with 4 good but not overwhelming pitches, good control and velocity, and a dominating left handed split. Comparable to Flip Davenport (WIC)

Charles Torrealba gets drafted at number 2 from the Western Heights High Jets in Oklahoma City. He will be a powerful first baseman for the Stars. He should be breaking homerun records in the Majors soon due to his projected elite ratings in contact, power and left split, and very good right split and good eye. Comparable to Jacob Martin (PAW)

San Francisco took AJ Carusco, a five-tool senior second baseman from UC-Irvine Anteaters, with the third overall pick. At UC-Irvine Carusco showed he has huge potential in his bat with elite contact and left handed split, and good power, batting eye and right split. Already 22, the major question is will he develop the glove and range to play 2B at the Major league level. Comparable to Yamil Santiago (MNT)

11/16/09: Kansas City Star for the cycle

Harvey Sexson notches another award line. The former 2-time National League MVP, 3-time Silver-Slugging Right fielder, 3-Time all-star and Homerun derby champ of season 2, adds hitting for the cycle to his list in a recent game against Detroit on 11/4/09 PM . He hit a triple in the first bringing home Miguel Alverez, a double in the third that also brought Alverez in, and a single in the sixth all on Tiger pitcher Tom Matheson. In the bottom of the eighth with the Stars winning 5-1 he knocked one over the wall on reliever Gus Martin. Congratulations Harvey.

11/16/09 Owner Interview with FUMANCHU of the Wichita Black Sox

Who is fumanchu? I am a 40 yr old (uugh) Realtor & IT Consultant, who is trying to start his own business. (Banks are being stingy these days). I am married, no kids, and 2 dogs. My wife just puts up with my silly computer games. I graduated from Texas (UT) in 91
How did you get start is HDB? I started in HBD when WIS first released it (I had been playing GD). If I remember correctly Eckersley was one of the first 10 worlds created and I jumped in when I saw the world was being created.
Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? I live in Dallas, TX so you can call me a homer. Besides the locals, I like the Colts (NFL) and Cardinals (MLB).
What is up with your team name? Team name came from the 1919 White sox scandal (Blacksox). I chose the city because I wanted a pitchers park but close to neutral.
What is your plan for your team? Well, my plans change but I try to use all aspects HBD has to offer. I use the draft, Rule 5, FA's. The only thing I ignore is Int'l FA's. Let's me put that money elsewhere in the budget. I never want to "rebuild", I want to always have a core set of players, and age doesn't matter.
Who are your rivals? I would have to say over the history of this league and Abbott/SLLA, Primetime and I have met in the playoffs a lot. He would definitely be one, tbook and decks always have good teams as well. Of course any team in my division as well!
Who is your favorite player in the Show? Favorite player on someone else's team? H. Baxter by far, he has been on this team since day one from Abbott/SLLA. I really wanted to get Kyle Causey but was just out spent on him; he will be a nice pitcher for a while.
What do you like about HDB? And what would you change? What I like about HBD is that is a love/hate relationship. The random shit that happens is nice but at the same time pisses you off! LOL. I would change the coach hiring by adding multi-year contracts and the ability to promote from within as well as fire a coach.

11/16/09: Owner Interview with GGD1022 of the Durham Daze

Who is ggd1022? Greg Dickerson birthday 10/22/68, From: Peoria, IL
How did you get started in HDB? Started out in Sim Leagues, HBD seemed to intimidating and time consuming. Once I started, I never went back to Sim Leagues.
Who are your favorite real-life sports teams? Cubs, Bears, Lakers, and Notre Dame Favorite Players: Bo Jackson, Magic Johnson
What is up with your team name? Comes from the movie Dazed and Confused.
Who are your rivals? My largest today is Tampa Bay. I also keep dcinto in the back of my mind because we use to compete hard in the original Show.
Who is your favorite player in the Show? Favorite player on someone else's team? Bill Stanley is my favorite player. Bill Stanley won about 3 CY Young awards in the old league but he will probably never make the HOF when it arrives. Luis Tarasco is my favorite player in the league
What do you like about HDB? And what would you change? Likes: Constant improvement to website is appreciated. Dislikes: I hate the fact that the old stats did not transfer over from the old league. I also wish we had more flexibility to adjust our payroll (the $4 change limit is frustrating to me).
